Yale School of Management Receives A $100 Million Gift For Programs to Strengthen Leadership in Public Education
Yale School of Management has received a $100 million naming gift, the largest in the school’s 43 year history, from The Eli and Edyth Broad Foundation to develop innovative teaching and research programs dedicated to strengthening leadership of the American public school systems. The Broad Center will offer a one year master’s degree as well as a number of training programs for senior public school education professionals.
Announced by Kerwin K. Charles, who’s the Indra Nooyi Dean & Frederic D. Wolfe Professor of Economics, Policy, and Management, the gift will be used to fund The Broad Center at Yale SOM. The Broad Center is an independent nonprofit organisation started by The Eli and Edyth Broad Foundation to support and develop K-12 public school system leaders. The Broad Center will also help in creating a tuition-free master’s program for future education professionals, as well as leadership training for leading school system professionals, and an extensive research program aimed at collating the data on public education leadership.
The Broad Center at Yale SOM will also be responsible for changing how skilled management practices can improve public school performances, which would later help create benefits for schools, students, teachers, administrators, and communities nationally. Taking the strategies already employed by The Broad Center over the last 20 years, the center will advance those with the input of management and business scholars as well as the vast resources of Yale University.
Dean Kerwin K. Charles, in a statement, says:
We are simply awed by the generosity of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and by the commitment to improving the lives of all in America that is reflected in their philanthropy. Those outside our community may be surprised to see a business school dedicate a major program to public education, but this is exactly the type of issue our school has always cared about—one where leadership informed by systemic thinking, rigorous analysis, and compassion can make a real difference for communities. We share this core vision with The Broad Foundation, and I am excited to see how the strengths of this school and the strengths of The Broad Center can combine to help us realize it.
Yale SOM also aims to make a positive impact on public education through the work of the Broad Center, and will offer a one-year master’s degree in education management, as well as offering advanced executive training program for senior district leaders. The two programs will train nearly 50 leaders each year and will be kept tuition free so as to not let cost act as a deterrent.
The new Yale SOM center will allow leaders of the country’s urban school systems to address the challenges that are currently being faced in the education sector through rigorous insights and frameworks, and create new opportunities for some of the most underserved students. It’ll also help in placing a bigger emphasis on equity and inclusion in both research and teaching.
The gift also allows the school to create new faculty positions for social science research related to education, allowing for the building of a research infrastructure, that would benefit all scholars interested in the field. The Broad Center at Yale SOM will commence operations this year by beginning a search for new faculty and staff and planning future programs.
